Tons of machinery, placed like jewels.
WEG keeps industry turning, literally. Founded in 1961 in Jaraguá do Sul, Brazil, by an electrician, a mechanic, and a manager — Werner, Eggon, and Geraldo, whose initials gave the company its name — the group has become one of the world's leading manufacturers of electric motors, gearmotors, drives, transformers, and automation solutions, with nearly 40,000 employees and a presence in some 140 countries. For the SIM exhibition, the annual gathering of the French mineral industry, WEG entrusted Expace with the design and production of its bespoke stand.
A WEG motor is heavy, blue, and built to work where nothing is forgiven: quarries, cement works, crushing, conveying, mineral processing. It's not a product you'd usually put in a shop window. Yet this is exactly the approach of this stand: treating mechanics as an exhibition piece, and making sure a visitor stops in front of a geared motor as they would in front of a design object. At SIM, where quarry and mine operators and all their suppliers meet, this was the best way to stand out in an aisle where everyone displays heavy equipment.
The stand is an island, open on all its aisles, with no partition to block the view. Above, a monumental suspended sign with rounded corners bears the backlit logo on its sides and diffuses, through its translucent underside, a soft and homogeneous light over the entire space: it serves both as a long-distance landmark and general lighting, avoiding the forest of spotlights seen everywhere else. Below, two low plinths, white and grey, highlighted with a blue LED strip and stamped with the logo, each carry a real machine — a geared motor and a high-power motor — accompanied by its technical description card. Nothing is hidden, nothing is covered up: the product is the decor.
The rest of the stand works in the background to leave this space for the machines. A long reception counter in light wood, high stools, a few plants and a high table make up the commercial contact area; a signed blue partition marks the back and hides the storage area; the light, solid-coloured floor allows the eye to wander from one aisle to another. The palette is limited to three values — white, wood, WEG blue — so that the only true splash of color remains that of the motors.
